Top 10 Bakeries in San Diego (Chef Jenn Approved!)

As a personal/private chef in San Diego, I take pride in sourcing the best local ingredients to create unforgettable meals for my clients, whether I’m crafting a casual family dinner or a multi-course vacation celebration. One of my favorite ways to share the flavor of San Diego is through the incredible local bakeries scattered across our vibrant city. From iconic institutions to hidden gems, here are my Top 10 Bakeries in San Diego—places I turn to again and again for croissants, cookies, cakes, and more. Whether you’re planning a special event, booking a personal chef experience, or simply want to explore the city through its sweets, these bakeries are must-visits! 1. Wayfarer Bread & Pastry (La Jolla Shores) My absolute favorite. Wayfarer serves the best croissants in San Diego, along with crave-worthy sandwiches and freshly baked breads that elevate every meal. I often stop here for breakfast pastries before prepping for a private brunch or to grab loaves for my clients’ cheese boards. 2. Izola Bakery (East Village) A close second! Izola is a masterclass in laminated dough. Their croissants are light, flaky, and full of soul. I also love their sourdough bread, which has become a favorite for my sandwich boards and cozy in-home lunches. Bonus Points They bake small batches throughout the day until they sell out. This means you can expect hot-from-the-oven croissants when you visit! 3. MichiMichi (Bankers Hill) This newly opened bakery collective is one of the most innovative spots in San Diego. Think: pastry meets art gallery. Their menu rotates often, and I’m always inspired by their creativity. I’ve brought their pastries to client brunches and they never fail to spark conversation and admiration. 4. VG Donuts & Bakery (Cardiff-by-the-Sea) A North County classic, VG’s has been serving up nostalgia and deliciousness since 1969. Their blueberry buttermilk bars are legendary, and their red velvet cakes and cookies are crowd-pleasers at birthdays and holiday dinners. It’s old school in the best way. 5. Bread & Cie (Hillcrest) This Parisian-style bakery has been a part of my life for as long as I’ve been cooking in San Diego. I love the neighborhood feel, the rustic breads, and their perfectly executed pastries. It’s a go-to for my chef pantry, especially for artisan loaves, baguettes, and breakfast treats. 6. Relic Bageri (Pop-Ups Throughout San Diego) Keep an eye out for Relic’s pop-ups—they bring creative twists on classic croissants, often infused with seasonal flavors or unexpected ingredients. These pastries are as beautiful as they are delicious. I love grabbing a few for styled shoots or special brunch setups. 7. Prager Brothers Artisan Breads (Hillcrest, Carlsbad, and Encinitas) While best known for their crusty, golden baguettes and sourdough loaves, Prager Brothers also crafts some delightful sweet treats. Their commitment to quality and traditional methods is something I deeply respect and seek to emulate in my own kitchen. 8. Blackmarket Bakery (North Park) Cookies, cakes, tarts—you name it. Blackmarket Bakery has an endless pastry case, including options for vegan and gluten-free clients (a huge win in my book!). I’ve used their shortbread cookies, served with strawberries and whipped cream for as a simple dessert option or offered their sourdough bread as part of a simple lunch buffet with all the sandwich necessities. 9. Secret Sister (South Park) True to its name, this place feels like a delicious secret. Their seasonal cakes and rotating baked goods are stunning. I often bring a selection of their mini treats to client homes as a sweet welcome gift or party favor. These bakeries are part of what makes San Diego’s culinary scene so rich and exciting. As a private chef, I’m always looking for ways to celebrate local artisans and bring their work to the tables of my clients. If you’re planning a special dinner, family vacation, or just want to explore the flavors of San Diego with a chef’s touch, I’d love to cook for you. A Food Lover’s Weekend Road Trip from LA to San Diego

Looking for the perfect weekend escape from Los Angeles? Let me guide you on a delicious, experience-rich road trip to San Diego—my home base and one of Southern California’s fastest-growing foodie destinations. Whether you’re staying in La Jolla, Coronado, or a cozy coastal Airbnb in Encinitas, this itinerary has it all: farm stops, croissants worth the drive, just-caught seafood, and unforgettable dinners. Here’s how I’d do it: Friday: Grab & Go, Then Hit the Road Start your weekend with a proper breakfast. I always recommend Lodge Bread Company—they have locations in Pasadena, Woodland Hills, Beverly Hills, and Culver City. Whether it’s their savory breakfast sandwich or one of the best cinnamon rolls in LA, it’s a road trip-worthy stop before you even hit the freeway. Have a little extra time? Detour to The Ecology Center in San Juan Capistrano (open 9am–3pm, Wednesday through Sunday). Enjoy coffee, pastries, and fresh farm-to-table bites in a beautiful open-air setting. Trust me—nothing hits like real food eaten on a farm, not in a drive-thru. Arrive in San Diego & Unwind Once you arrive, check into your hotel or vacation rental. If you’re staying in an Airbnb, here’s my favorite tip: book a private chef for your first night. (Yes, I know someone fabulous!) Settle in, pour a glass of wine, and let the restaurant come to you. It’s the perfect way to start your stay relaxed and well-fed. Saturday: Croissants, Markets & Coastal Adventures Kick off your morning with Izola Bakery in downtown San Diego. Their croissants—96 layers of buttery bliss—are architectural wonders, and they’re baked fresh throughout the day. After breakfast, hop on the ferry to Coronado Island for a scenic stroll or beachfront lunch at the iconic Hotel del Coronado. Prefer something more local? Visit the Tuna Harbor Dockside Market, where you can meet San Diego fishermen and pick up some of the freshest seafood you’ll ever find—think uni cracked open to order. Dinner to Remember: Anime or Kingfisher San Diego’s restaurant scene is seriously leveling up. With so many incredible places to choose from, I’ve narrowed it down to two standout spots that combine stunning ambiance with exceptional cuisine. Anime – A sleek, Asian-influenced West Coast steakhouse with major wow factor. Expect a tour of bold, globally inspired dishes like crispy pig ears, Australian wagyu, uni, and cocktails as beautiful as they are delicious. Kingfisher – Located in historic Golden Hill, this Vietnamese-French fusion restaurant is pure magic. Soulful dishes, bold flavors, and a dazzling art deco space paired with a creative cocktail program make for an unforgettable night out. After-Dinner Vibes: Lou Lou’s or The Lafayette Still in the mood to explore? Stop by The Lafayette Hotel for vintage bowling lanes and expertly crafted cocktails, or grab a seat at Lou Lou’s Jungle Room & Supper Club. With moody lighting, a clamshell stage, and old-school lounge vibes, it’s part speakeasy, part transportive experience—and open to the public most nights. Sunday: Sleep In, Then Fuel Up Soak up your last day in San Diego with a slow morning and something satisfying. Grab a breakfast burrito from Lucha Libre Taco Shop for the ride back, or swing through Pipes Café in Cardiff-by-the-Sea. It’s casual, local, and a bit legendary. (Don’t tell anyone I told you.) See You in San Diego Whether you’re coming for the croissants, the cocktails, or the calm of the coast, San Diego is ready to spoil you. And if you’re looking for a private dining experience that brings the restaurant to you—I’d love to cook for you. Let’s make your weekend getaway even more delicious.

Roasted Beet & Citrus Salad with Ginger Maple Dressing

At Chef Jenn Cooks, we believe every meal should nourish the body and delight the senses. As a personal chef specializing in creating unforgettable dining experiences, I’m excited to showcase a stunning seasonal winter recipe: Roasted Beet & Citrus Salad! This vibrant and flavorful dish is a recent highlight from an engagement brunch I prepared for a lovely couple. While the couple embraced a vegan lifestyle, their extended family had varying tastes, and my goal was to craft a meal that would impress everyone at the table. This salad did just that, bringing together colorful roasted beets, zesty citrus, and a zippy maple-ginger vinaigrette. Here’s how you can create this showstopper at your next dinner party! Ready to elevate your culinary gatherings? Contact me today to discuss how we can create unforgettable moments through delicious food! With my expertise in crafting unique and inclusive menus, I can turn your next event into a culinary celebration that everyone can enjoy! Let’s make your next dinner party an event to remember! Roasted Beet & Citrus Salad Ingredients: For the Salad: 2 pounds assorted beets (red, yellow, Chioggia, candy cane, etc.), scrubbed clean and greens removed 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil, divided Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 3 oz candied walnuts 1 grapefruit (cut into suprêmes or wedges) 1 orange (cut into suprêmes) 1 blood orange (cut into suprèmes) 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice Pickled red onion (see recipe below) 4 to 7 oz crumbled vegan cheese or goat cheese Edible flowers for garnish (optional) For the Dressing: 2 tablespoons freshly grated ginger 1 teaspoon maple syrup 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/3 cup white balsamic vinegar 1 cup extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly cracked black pepper to taste Quick Pickled Red Onion: 1 small red onion, thinly sliced 1/2 cup white balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar Kosher salt Instructions: Roast the Beets: Preheat the oven to 375°F. Use cold water to wash the beets and cut off the tops and bottoms. Cut the beets in half and toss with 2 tablespoons of olive oil, salt, and pepper. Wrap the beets in aluminum foil, lined with parchment paper, to create a sealed package. Roast for about 1 hour or until tender. Once roasted, wear rubber gloves or use paper towels to gently rub the skins off the beets. Cut the peeled beets into wedges. Prepare the Citrus: Segment the grapefruit, orange, and blood orange, reserving any juice for the dressing. Make the Quick Pickled Red Onion: In a jar, combine the sliced onions, white balsamic vinegar, sugar, and a pinch of salt. Let sit for at least 30 minutes. Prepare the Dressing: In a bowl, whisk together grated ginger, maple syrup, Dijon mustard, white balsamic vinegar, and juices from segmented citrus. Then slowly pour in olive oil, whisking constantly as you add the oil in a slow steady stream. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Assemble the Salad: In a large bowl, toss the citrus segments in 1/3 of the dressing. In a separate bowl toss the beet in a 1/3 of the dressing, keeping any dark-colored or red beets separate. Arrange the beets on a large platter, layering them with citrus, candied walnuts, crumbled cheese, and pickled onions. Drizzle with the remaining 1/3 of the dressing over the top and finish with edible flowers for a beautiful presentation. This Roasted Beet & Citrus Salad is visually stunning and packed with flavors that harmonize beautifully. This recipe showcases the best of the winter season in Southern California. Whether hosting a brunch, dinner party, or a special celebration, this dish will leave your guests raving. If you’re looking to impress friends and family at your next event, consider booking Chef Jenn Cooks for personalized dining experiences that cater to all dietary preferences.
Modern Waldorf Salad with a Canna Twist

Hey there, food lovers! Chef Jenn here, coming to you with a fresh take on fall flavors, Southern California style. As the sun continues to shine and the temperatures hover around a delightful 80 degrees, we’re all about infusing some seasonal flair into our dishes. Recently, I had the pleasure of chatting about fall recipes on the “How to Do the Pot” podcast, where we explored creative ways to incorporate cannabis into everyday cooking. Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or simply curious, adding a touch of cannabis to your favorite recipe is super easy! It can be as simple as adding your favorite edible. For this recipe, I would add my go-to, Plus Tart Cherry Relief, which can elevate your culinary adventures effortlessly. These 1 MG THC gummies are a great low-dose edible. Or you can use infused honey or a few drops of your preferred tincture, which are equally fantastic options! Now, let’s dive into today’s star dish: Waldorf Salad. This classic salad gets a vibrant twist with a creamy Greek yogurt dressing and a delightful medley of crunchy and sweet ingredients. Traditionally, Waldorf Salad uses mayonnaise as the base for the dressing, but I’ve swapped it out for Greek yogurt to lighten up the dish while adding a tangy brightness that complements the flavors beautifully. Ingredients: For the Vinaigrette: 1/4 cup plain Greek yogurt 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar 4 tablespoons olive oil 1/4 teaspoon Dijon mustard Sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste For the Salad: 1/3 cup walnuts or pecans, toasted and chopped 2/3 cup celery, chopped 2 small Granny Smith apples, cored and diced 2 small Pink Lady apples, cored and diced 2 tablespoons dried cherries, roughly chopped 1 head Boston leaf lettuce Cherry or apple-flavored edibles Celery leaves, for garnish Instructions: Prepare the Vinaigrette: In a bowl, whisk together Greek yogurt, lemon juice, white wine vinegar, olive oil, Dijon mustard, sea salt, and black pepper until smooth. Assemble the Salad: Combine toasted nuts, chopped celery, diced apples, and dried cherries in a large salad bowl. Pour the prepared vinaigrette over the salad ingredients and toss gently to coat evenly. Serve: Arrange Boston leaf lettuce on individual plates or a serving platter. Spoon the dressed salad over the lettuce. Garnish with celery leaves for an extra pop of freshness and your favorite edibles. This Waldorf Salad is not only a feast for the senses but also a celebration of the season’s best. Whether you’re enjoying it for lunch or as a light dinner, the infusion of cannabis adds a playful twist that enhances the dining experience. Chef Jenn’s Cannabis Infusion Tips: For cannabis dinners, I like to give my guests control over how much they consume. Instead of infusing the whole salad, I recommend using an infused garnish ( i.e. edibles) or infusing the dressing. Other Infusion Options: If you were interested in infusing the dressing by adding a few drops of your favorite tincture. I find keeping the infusion in the dressing allows guests more control. This way, everyone gets to enjoy the salad, and no one has to worry about over-consuming. For more delicious recipes and personalized culinary experiences, follow along on social media. Let’s cook up something amazing together!
Spiced Apple Cherry Cake with Toasted Caramel Pecan Sauce with a Cannabis Twist

Hey, everyone! Chef Jenn here, and I’m so excited to share one of my favorite fall dessert recipes, straight from my recent podcast interview on “How to Do the Pot”! This Spiced Apple Cherry Cake with Toasted Caramel Pecan Sauce is perfect for cozying up as the weather cools down. It’s got all those warm spices, the tartness of Granny Smith apples, and sweet pops of dried cherries—topped with a rich caramel pecan sauce that takes it over the top! Now, if you know me, you know I love giving people the freedom to personalize their dining experience. Rather than infusing an entire dish, I prefer to infuse sauces and serve them on the side. This allows each guest to tailor their dose to their comfort level, ensuring that no one ever has to skip a dish out of concern about overconsumption. It’s all about making cannabis-infused dining both approachable and enjoyable, while keeping everything safe and, of course, delicious! Let me show you how to make this delicious treat, and I’ll walk you through my cannabis infusion tips along the way. Spiced Apple Cherry Cake with Toasted Caramel Pecan Sauce Serves: 12 to 14 Ingredients: ½ lb unsalted butter 1 cup sugar 2 eggs ½ tbsp vanilla 1 ½ cups flour ¼ tsp freshly grated nutmeg 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 ½ tsp baking soda ½ tsp salt 2 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled and chopped ¼ cup pecans, chopped ⅓ cup dried cherries Instructions: Preheat your oven to 350°F and grease a 13×9-inch cake pan (or a quarter sheet pan). Line with parchment paper for easy removal. In a stand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy (about 4 minutes). Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each, and mix in the vanilla. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, nutmeg, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, beating on low until just combined. Fold in the apples, pecans, and cherries. Spread the thick batter into your prepared pan, using a spatula to smooth it out. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let it cool before slicing. Toasted Caramel Pecan Sauce Serves: 14 to 16 Ingredients: 4 tbsp unsalted butter ½ cup pecans 1 cup light or dark brown sugar 1/2 cup whipping cream 1/2 cup whipping cream mixed with desired dosage of infused cannabis oil Instructions: Melt the butter over medium-high heat and add the pecans. Stir for 2-3 minutes until lightly toasted and fragrant. Stir in the brown sugar and cook until it begins to melt. Add 1/2 cup cream and cook until the mixture boils, stirring constantly to dissolve the sugar. Remove from heat and whisk in 1/2 cup infused cream. Drizzle this rich, nutty sauce over slices of the cake. Chef Jenn’s Cannabis Infusion Tips: For cannabis dinners, I like to give my guests control over how much they consume. Instead of infusing the whole cake, I recommend infusing the toasted caramel cream sauce, but there are many ways to infuse this recipe. Other Infusion Options: If you were interested in infusing the cake you could replace some or all of the butter, sugar, or even cannabis-infused flour to the cake batter itself. But for events, I find keeping the infusion in the sauce allows guests more control. This way, everyone gets to enjoy the dessert, and no one has to worry about over-consuming. Plus, let’s be real—who can resist a rich caramel sauce? This cake is a total hit whether you infuse it or not. So go ahead, try it out, and don’t forget to tag me on social media when you make it! Happy baking and infusing!
Treat Mom to Breakfast in Bed this Mother’s Day with Quick and Easy Cinnamon Rolls

Mother’s Day is a time to celebrate the incredible women in our lives, and what better way to show appreciation than by treating Mom to a delightful breakfast in bed? These quick and easy cinnamon rolls are the perfect way to start her day on a sweet note. Best of all, you can make them the night before with the help of mom or dad, so all you have to do in the morning is pop them in the oven and prepare to impress. Ingredients: For the Dough: 2 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour (spooned & leveled) 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup whole milk 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 and 1/4 teaspoons Platinum Yeast from Red Star or any instant yeast (1 standard packet) 1 large egg, at room temperature For the Filling: 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, extra softened 1/3 cup packed dark brown sugar 1/4 cup turbinado sugar 2 tablespoons non-fat milk powder 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon For the Cream Cheese Icing: 4 ounces full-fat block cream cheese, softened to room temperature 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened to room temperature 2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla bean paste Instructions: 1. Make the Dough: Whisk the flour, sugar, and salt together in a large bowl and set aside. Heat the milk and butter in a saucepan on the stove until the butter has melted and the mixture is warm to the touch. Transfer the mixture to a stand mixer and beat until the temperature reaches about 110°F/43°C. Beat in the yeast until dissolved, then add the egg and mix on medium speed until a soft dough forms. 2. Fill the Rolls: Roll out the dough into a 20×14-inch rectangle on a lightly floured surface. Spread the softened butter on top of the dough. In a small bowl, mix together the dark brown sugar, turbinado sugar, milk powder, and cinnamon, then sprinkle the mixture evenly over the dough. Roll up the dough to make a 20-inch log, then cut into 10–12 even rolls and arrange in a lightly greased 9 X 13-inch square baking pan. 3. Rise: Cover the pan with plastic wrap and allow the rolls to rise in a warm environment for 60–90 minutes or until doubled in size. 4. Bake the Rolls: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 24–27 minutes, or until lightly browned. If the tops are browning too quickly, loosely tent the pan with aluminum foil. Remove from the oven and place on a wire rack to cool. 5. Make the Icing: In a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, beat the cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Add the butter and beat until smooth, then beat in the confectioners’ sugar and vanilla bean paste until combined. Spread the icing over the warm rolls and serve immediately. These homemade cinnamon rolls are sure to make Mom feel loved and appreciated this Mother’s Day. Serve them with a fresh cup of coffee or her favorite tea for the ultimate breakfast in bed experience. Remember, it’s the thought and effort that counts, so don’t worry if they’re not perfect – Mom will appreciate the gesture no matter what. Happy Mother’s Day! Note: Leftover rolls can be stored tightly covered at room temperature for up to 2 days or in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Try Our Simple 420 Recipe for a Tomato, Peach, and Whipped Purple Haze Goat Cheese Salad

As many know, I prefer to consume my cannabis through alternative methods rather than smoking. For this recipe, I’ve chosen a simple way to infuse it using Proof Extracts Bazilion drops. These drops offer a subtle yet deliciously terpene-rich flavor that can easily be incorporated with just a few drops on your salad or any recipe. This recipe can also be made without cannabis for any friends who don’t consume. Instead try a “smokable pairing”. I have a few suggestions: Super Lemon Haze, known for its beautiful citrus notes; Jack Herer, celebrated for its delightful spicy and herbal nuances; or Wedding Cake, recognized for its sweet and peppery undertones. For those wishing to smoke, I would choose a strain enriched with linalool, limonene, and pinene. These terpenes bring forth an aromatic bouquet of florals (reminiscent of dried lavender in the goat cheese), citrus (akin to lemon juice and lemon zest in this recipe), and tangy notes (complementing the goat cheese’s tanginess with fennel and the delicate spice of fresh basil). This infusion enhances the overall sensory experience of the dish. With a thoughtful strain selection, the right cannabis variety can elevate the flavors without overpowering the salad’s delicate charm, ensuring a harmonious and enjoyable culinary adventure. Serves 4 Dressing: 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil 1tablespoon white balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon Dijion mustard ½ teaspoon fresh lemon zest (reserve for whipped goat cheese), plus 2 teaspoons juice Kosher salt and black pepper Salad: ¼ small red onion, very thinly sliced 2 large heirloom tomatoes (about 14 ounces total), cored and cut into 1-inch wedges 2 medium peaches (about 12 ounces), halved, pitted and cut into ½-inch wedges ½ to 1 cup torn basil leaves (optional) Whipped Goat Cheese: 4 ounces soft Cypress Grove Purple Haze goat cheese DOSING: courtesy of Christina Wong Low Dose // 5mg THC per serving: You’ll need 7 drops of Proof Bazillion Drops. 20mg THC total. High Dose // 100mg THC per serving: You’ll need 6 droppers (6ml) of Proof Bazillion Drops. 400mg THC total. 6 tablespoons heavy cream 1 teaspoon lemon zest, finely zested or chopped Step 1 In a large bowl, whisk the olive oil, vinegar, mustard and lemon juice. Season generously with salt and pepper, stir in the red onion and set aside. Step 2 Place red onion in a small bowl, cover with water and soak for at least 10 minutes (to mellow the sharp onion flavor). Then strain and pat dry with a paper towel. Step 3 Crumble the goat cheese into the bowl of a food processor (or with a hand blender) and add cannabis oil. Process until creamy, scraping down the sides of the work bowl as needed, 1 to 2 minutes. Add the heavy cream and lemon zest; process until light fluffy, about 1 minute, scraping the bowl as needed. Transfer to a bowl and season to taste with salt. Step 4 Spread the whipped goat cheese on a large serving platter or in shallow bowl, distributing it evenly using the back of a spoon. Add the tomato wedges, peach wedges and red onion to the dressing and toss to coat. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Place on top of the whipped goat cheese and garnish with torn basil. Serve Cannabis infusion Notes: courtesy of Christina Wong– How to Infuse Food Using a Tincture Chef Jenn recommends using a cannabis tincture to infuse this recipe. Specifically Proof Bazillion Drops, a tincture made with MCT coconut oil that’s extremely potent. Please dose with caution, and err on the side of less. About Proof Bazillion Drops // entire bottle = 1,000mg THC 1 drop = 3mg THC and 3mg CBD Half a dropper (0.5ml) = 33mg THC and 33mg CBD Full dropper (1ml) = 66mg THC and 66mg CBD These drops offer a subtle yet deliciously terpene-rich flavor that can easily be incorporated with just a few drops on your salad or any dish.
